Nine General Instructions for Fitting Sleeves
- The use of an adapter sleeve permits a bearing to be fitted at any position on a shaft with a correct degree of rigidity. However, care is necessary to ensure that the fittings done properly.
- Before mounting, clean the shaft, the bearing and sleeve and check all dimensions to ensure that they are within the tolerance limits
- The oil film applied to the washed out bearing bore, shaft and sleeve should be very thin. A heavy coating would reduce the friction and thud ease mounting, however during operation the joint and the tight fit of the bearing may become” loose and damage the bearing.
- Opening the slot of the sleeve by the means of a suitable wedge makes it easier to slide the sleeve on the shaft.
- To tighten the nut, it is preferable to use a hook spanner. For larger bearings, the mounting nut with thrust bolts facilitates mounting. These thrust bolts are tighten diagonally.
- The reduction in radial clearance can be used as a measure of the seating condition of the inner ring. It is necessary* to check the initial radial clearance of the bearing before mounting and then repeatedly check the clearance during mounting until the proper amount of reduction and thus the required tight fit are obtained. If the reduction in clears-se cannot be measured, then the axial displacement can be measured to give the suitable tight fit.
- After tightening, a suitable tab of the washer which is in line with a notch of the nut is bent into the notch of the nut If no tab is in position, the nut is tightened a little more to achieve this. For bearing of larger sizes, the nut is locked by means of locking clamps.
- Dismounting: For dismounting adapters, the washer tab is made straight and the lock nut is loosened by two or three turns by a hook spanner. A drift is applied to the side of the nut and is struck with a hammer to push out the adapter sleeve. The bearing can be removed easily. For dismounting bearing of large sizes (above 200mm shaft diameter), the hydraulic method is used to dismount them.
- For dismounting bearing fitted with withdrawal sleeves, first the shaft nut is removed. The suitable extraction nut is mounted on to the thread portion of the withdrawal sleeve. By tightening the same using a hook spanner, the withdrawal sleeves is removed from the bearing. For dismounting bearings of large diameter, the hydraulic method is used.
